Terms of use
Last updated October 10, 2026
Warbly is a free, non-commercial project for learning birds by sight, sound and story, starting with the birds of northern Utah. These terms are short. By using Warbly, you agree to them.
Free and non-commercial
Warbly is free to use. It has no ads and no paid features.
Made for learning
The lessons, facts and pages are here to help you learn birds.
Photos and recordings
Every photo and recording belongs to the person credited for it and is used under its Creative Commons license. Many of those licenses are non-commercial, so Warbly stays free, with no ads or paid features. Please don’t copy media out of Warbly except as its license allows. Each one’s author and license are on its bird’s page and on the Credits page.
Donating photos and recordings
Donate only photos and recordings you made yourself. You keep the copyright and give them the license you choose: CC0 lets anyone use the file for any purpose, and CC BY 4.0 lets anyone use it as long as they credit you. Warbly reviews every donation and might not use it. A donation stays if you later delete your account, because its license can’t be taken back. Please keep people out of donated photos and recordings, and don’t name the exact place of a nest, roost or display ground.
No warranty
Warbly is offered as it is, without any warranty. Bird identification can be tricky, and Warbly can be wrong. Before you rely on an identification, check it with a field guide or local experts.
“Why?” answers
Answers from “Why? Ask Claude” are written by AI. They are based on Warbly’s own facts, but they can still be wrong.
“Name it from a photo”
Matches for a photo come from AI. They can be wrong, so compare the field marks before you log or share a sighting. Send only photos you took or are allowed to use, and keep people out of them.
Be kind to birds
Don’t play recordings loudly in the field to call birds in, especially in nesting season. Listen with headphones or at a low volume, and follow local rules. When you share sightings, keep the exact places of nests, roosts and display grounds to yourself.
Flocks and classes
Choose a name for a group that you’d be happy for its members to see, and be kind: cheers only. The person who started a flock or class can remove members, who then can’t rejoin that group, and can make a new code at any time. Teachers who use Warbly with a class are responsible for following their school’s rules for classroom apps.
Accounts
Email sign-in is for people 13 and older. Younger learners can use Warbly without an email. A sign-in link works like a password, so please don’t share it.
Changes to Warbly
Warbly may change, and the service may pause or stop. Your progress is always saved in your browser, and you can save a copy as a file from the Progress page.
Changes to these terms
When these terms change, the date at the top changes too. If you have a question, send it through “Send feedback” on the app’s Progress page.
